I’ve come to a realization lately-yogis are assholes.
Yoga studios are filled with shady charlatans, charming seducers and self-righteous types.
If you don’t believe me, look in the news- yoga teachers facing rape charges, some involved in financial scandals, others involved in drug use and reported Wiccan Sex Cults.
Yes, the same jerk who was suspended by BBC for a phone prank scandal (he called police during a stand-up routine claiming to have found the culprit of recent sexual assaults in the Northampton area), who won an award as “Shagger of the Year” , and who was a notorious heroin addict and an all around disaster.
So, when I saw his name on my Deepak Chopra Urban Yogis page, I was pissed.
Then…….I watched it.
And I was astounded.
Russell talked about yoga, union and the reality that addiction is the result (as much human suffering is) of the belief that we are separate from each other and the Universe. He explained that, through yoga, he finds a relief from this falsehood that we are in this alone. And, it’s worked. He’s clean and sober and even holding events to raise money for addiction awareness. His depth is unexpected-he says things like this:
It’s difficult to believe in yourself because the idea of self is an artificial construction. You are, in fact, part of the glorious oneness of the universe. Everything beautiful in the world is within you.
And, when you watch the videos he’s in-it’s astounding how clear and aware he is of deep spirituality and yoga theory.
Yes, some yogis are assholes.
But, if yoga can take someone as lost and screwed up as Russell Brand and pull him out of a life of addiction-maybe it’s proof that the practice is SO real and good and pure that it reaches out to EVERY one of us. Even the jerks. Even the assholes.
Because, isn’t that the point of it all anyway? That we are all interconnected and inherently Divine after all?
Now I feel like the asshole for judging.
Lucky for me, yoga will accept jerks like me.
